So, you may or may not know by now–I set a goal each month to try one new food a week. You can check out August, May and June, or just look below for September’s tries!
Week One: Masa Harina
What I Did with It
I made Arapas and Mexican Shepherd’s Pie.
What I Thought of It
I love it’s texture and consistency which is somewhere between regular flour and cornmeal. It is a little plain on its own (well, it is just flour) but spices up great!
Week Two: Red Bean Paste
What I Did with It
Put it on a rice cake. With dramatic lighting.
What I Thought of It
Oh, I’m supposed to eat the rice cake too? You sure I can’t just lick it off?
Week Three: Fufu Flour
What I Did with It
I made Fufu and Red Red.
What I Thought of It
Fufu and I had so much fun. Have you always wanted to live out that childhood dream of eating Play-Doh? Well, now’s your chance. And, you know, it’s a great accompaniment for soups and curry dishes and all that jazz.
Week Four: Quinoa Flakes
What I Did with It
This may be a bit of a cheat item–it’s not a new food, but it’s definitely a second-chance food. I made it a few times as hot cereal, and strongly disliked the odd taste accompanying it. However, I gave it another go with gingerbread quinoa flake cake.
What I Though of It
But why’s the quinoa gone? Ohh, I’m almost too much of a dork sometimes. Almost. But, much like me and nutritional yeast, I’m glad I gave this another go. Quinoa cakes are my new favorite just-home-from-work treat.

Everytime you post those new tries, I know I need to experiment more…and then I totally forget about it
But today I am reminded once again
You just have to have fun with something that is called “fufu”. The name speaks for itself
And red bean paste is good, I make my own and love it!
Ooo, you make your own? That sounds like it would be extra delicious!
I usually just blend beans with a bit of lemon juice, freshly ground pepper, a little cumin and tahini (if I have some) or olive/peanut oil. The key is to blend it all really really well!
Oh, that sounds so good! I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for plain red beans now.
I may have to join you on the “new food each week” trial! There are so many things out there to be experimented with!!!
You should definitely do it! I have so much fun with it
I need to give nooch another try. Especially since I have a hugh jass container of it.
I couldn’t stand it at first, but I was expecting cheese. Now that I just expect nooch, I really like it.
Love how you try a new one each week. I need to get on this wagon!
You should! It’s so much fun, and you get to discover new favorites–or at least have some food adventures.
I love these posts. The faces you make crack me up.
Haha, glad I can entertain
That last photo is hysterical. I’ve been on the lookout for quinoa flakes, but clearly haven’t been looking hard enough.
Is that yellow walls in the kitchen?! Love it.
I get mine at Whole Foods, but the Kroger on the fancy end of town also sells them (although for more than Whole Foods, woah). And they are yellow, just not quiiite that yellow (I’m not quite that yellow, either–thank you iphone camera)
I love quinoa but something about quinoa flakes just doesn’t work for me. Maybe I should give them another try like you did!
I definitely did not like them at first–this box had been sitting in a cabinet for months before I was brave enough to try again. I’m glad I did!
I often make that face after eating something, too.
Yum! Red bean paste!
Love that last photo. I haven’t tried any of those. Gotta love a food called fufu!
I think that’s half of why it’s so fun
That, and the play-doh-ness.
I’m trying things vicariously through you
haha I love trying new foods but I’m trying not to spend so much money on groceries! I’m glad you’re testing this stuff out
Luckily I’ve discovered an Asian grocery store with super cheap and funky stuff I’ve never tried before–hence the red bean paste and fufu. There are some weird veggies there I’m preparing to tackle next month
What FUN foods!! I used to do the Asian store all the time but am a little more organic now………I WISH some of their foods had more labelling!
