Although I’ve been a Meatless Monday: A to Z challenge slacker as of late, I came back for this week’s ingredient: Jalapenos.
And thank goodness y’all already know I make weird food, because this one is pushing it. Now, I can ramble on about how this is actually really really good, but you’re either going to look at this recipe and think: “Count me in!” or “There’s no way I’d ever try that.” So I’ll just put it out there and let you decide. (But seriously, it’s good. Like, sweet, spicy and creamy good.)
JalaPEAno Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1/2 banana
- 1/2 C frozen peas
- 1/2 jalapeno, seeded and diced
- 2/3 C Almond milk
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I recommend a strongly flavored vanilla powder like Vega Performance or Plant Fusion. If you’re using Sun Warrior, add extra vanilla and a little extra sweetener.)
- 1/2t vanilla
- 1t cinnamon
Directions
If you don’t have a fancy-shmancy blender (I’m rolling with a 5-year-old magic bullet), make sure you thaw your peas a little first. Stuff all your ingredients in a blender (add some spinach if you feel like it) and blend well. Sip, and enjoy this amazingly refreshing smoothie. Just the right hint of sweet, just the right hint of spice.
If you want to be brave but not that brave, just try a vanilla-pea smoothie and omit the jalapeno! If you want to be brave but more brave, throw in the whole jalapeno. And don’t blame me for the results…
Would you ever drink a jalaPEAno smoothie? What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever put in your smoothie?

I think I’m gonna let you do all the jalapeano smoothie drinking…those are two things I’m just not a big fan of!
Magic Bullet sounds like the name of a vibrator.
When my mom first got one years ago, I thought that’s what she was talking about. I was like “WHY are you telling me this, Mom?!” Hahaha!
Haha, I’ve always thought the same thing! Except this has blades. I think I’ll stick to using it for smoothies…
Haha considering I still can’t get my head around adding spinach to smoothies, this recipe takes strange to a whole new level
! Although I gotta say, it would have been a heck of a lot stranger (or strangely delicious) if you added in nutritional yeast…kinda like a liquid form of nachos & cheese!
That all being said, I can kiiinda see this work- chocolate & chilli is rather yum!
Ahaha, now I really want to make a nacho smoothie–you may have just inspired me to try something potentially awful, haha. But I still have jalapenos left, so why not! And yep, it’s definitely the same theory as chili+chocolate. Spicy and sweet just go together so well!
This is really cool! We are definitely going to have to try it – sweet and spicy is a fave combo of ours!
Thanks, you’ll have to let me know what you think! I’m a huge fan of the sweet & spicy as well–chili and chocolate? Magic.
So, I think I could do this shake…only without the peas! I’ve never liked peas – in fact, to this day, I won’t eat something if it has peas in it. But trust me, I make “weird” food all the time but as long as it tastes good to me (and my husband), it’s all good!
Honestly, you can’t even taste the peas! No identifiable round balls of pea-ness
Eh girl, haha! I relaly need to just cave in & give this smoothie a shot! Have an awesome Monday!
Haha, I think you do! It’s worth it just so you can say you’ve had a pea and jalapeno smoothie
true true.
I’m IN! Actually, I really do need to try this whole pea smoothie situation, and I’m super excited about the cutesy name you’ve come up with. I’m a sucker for that.
I think I was more excited by the fact that I came up with a goofy name than the fact that I made a tasty smoothie recipe to share ;D
i like spicey but I think that would kill me, big time.
It shouldn’t surprise you to know that this sound incredible to me. With the WHOLE jalapeno.
Ahaha, I knew you’d be all for the extra-brave version!
I’m not entirely sure I could hop on board with this one! But I bet the peas do make it nice and creamy! You are seriously creative!
Haha, I figured it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Or glass of spicy protein.
WOAH! I love jalapenos but I never would have thought to put one in my smoothie! haha
I would totally drink this, and have! well, sorta… I’ve added jalapenos to smoothies before – my favorite is a peach jalapeno smoothie. the strangest thing I think was when I was on a juice fast… Jason was craving pizza, so I juiced tomatoes, basil, garlic, even some walnuts (you know, for the crust!)
Ooo, peach and jalapeno would be delicious! I’ve gotta try that one next–I even have some peaches in my freezer and some extra jalapenos
And, hmm, pizza-in-a-cup. I’d definitely at least try it, if nothing else.
Wow!! I think you have just won the award for most creative smoothie ever! But given the fact that spinach and kale are amazing in smoothies, why can’t a jalapeno be too?! Right? If I liked spicy food (I seriously HATE it) I would definitely try it…..but otherwise, seriously, I think it sounds delicious!
Haha, spicy really seems to be a love or hate thing. You could always just try a regular pea smoothie! It definitely doesn’t taste like peas–same as putting spinach, etc., in a smoothie.
This is totally something I would do. I try to walk the line of decency because I split them with Andrew in the morning. Sometimes I get to work and I have a message, “What IS this?” I have no idea if he’d be into this, but this is definitely something I’d do. Perfect amounts of spice with the sweet!
I’ve been rocking the boring coconut milk, banana, spinach, cinnamon, cocoa powder. Boooooring.
Haha, you should make it and NOT warn him–that would certainly be a wake-up call first thing in the morning. And banana + cinnamon will never be boring. Nope.
UM. You are freaking hilarious and I’m so glad I found your blog. I am rolling with a 5 year magic bullet like no big deal as well. Can’t wait to read more!
Glad I can entertain
Thanks for stopping by the blog, Hollie! And aren’t magic bullets amazing? I’m convinced mine is NEVER going to stop working. And that I’ll never have an excuse to buy something newer/fancier…
I must admit I would never make a jalapeno smoothie. I rarely drink smoothies period as I really like the process of chewing. But you get huge points for originality!
I’m a food-over-smoothie fan too, but sometimes life just call for a sweet and spicy drink
That looks crazy! But, you’ll have to remind me next summer. I kind of go off of smoothies when it gets cold!
Hmmm… I don’t think I would. I would try a sip of someone else’s though!
I certainly never would have thought of that, but it actually sounds good! I amy just have to try it!
You my friend are a brave brave soul. I don’t think I could handle a jalapeno in a smoothie! Heck I can’t even handle super mild salsa!!! What can I say, I have a pansie tongue hahaha
btw…that glass the smoothie is in is freakin AWESOME
I actually thinks it sounds awesome and I really want to try it!!! Just need to pick up some peas.
Well the most unusual thing i’ve ever put in a smoothie is spinach! The peas sound good, although I don’t know whether I’d be brave enough to try the pepper… it looks lovely though and I’d give the peas a go
A very alternative & special smoothy, with a side kick!
Yumm!
This sounds so interesting! Jalapenos in my smoothies…not this I gotta try!
I think this sounds delicious, Allie!! I really need to dig out the old Magic Bullet and get on the smoothie bandwagon. I’ve tried Kombucha…now the sky’s the limit!
I would absolutely try this!
Thank you for the reci-pea! I’m so hap-pea to see it
What a great idea for a smoothie…peas…
I had a magic bullet for about a year and although I still have it in my possession, I invested in a Vitamix Blender….and I LOVE IT. Granted you really do have to invest in this because they are not cheap, I did the next best thing and purchased a refurbished one from the outlet store here in Cleveland. (Helps that they are headquartered here). So I saved on shipping costs which was nice and got two free recipe books.
I will say I do bring out the Magic Bullet once in a while when I just want to blend something simple like a protein powder with almond milk and don’t need anything else. But the Vitamix allows me to put pretty much anything I want in there. So far, nothing too weird unless you consider avacado’s or parsley to be weird. Not a fan of jalapeno’s but I do like trying new things. So far the only ingredient I didnt like too much was celery. I put way too much of it in one of my first creations and it was way too overpowering.
A Vitamix is definitely on my “dreaming of it” list–If my Magic Bullet ever breaks down, I’ll seriously consider investing. I need a nearby outlet! And parsley in a smoothie? That’s a new one to me! And yeah, not a huge celery eater, so I can’t imagine I’d really like it in a shake.
OMG…mind BLOWN! I have to try this!! My curiosity always does get the best of me, but hey, you never know until you try it!
Weirdest thing I’ve thrown in a smoothie? Hmm, well I did get desperate for greens once and used mixed salad greens instead of my usual spinach…it had a bit more of an Earthy taste to it, but not bad at all!
