So, I somehow managed to miss two whole weeks of Laura’s fabulous link-up–but it most certainly wasn’t because I was eating normal food. There’s nothing like an odd mix+match, and my life has been full of ‘em.
Strange-but-Good: Combo Edition
—
Candy canes + vodka. Okay, not weird: Spectacular. Especially when stirred into hot cocoa.
My hair + first thing in the morning. I mean, seriously, where’s gravity at 4am? Nowhere near my head, apparently.
Cast Iron + cornmeal. Okay, not at all strange. Until you get carried away trying to “healthify” your recipe and end up with a lumpy brown…lump. Fear not, I will venture into cornbread-making again soon. This time? With white flour, butter, and delicious classic cornbread goodness. Lesson learned.
Breakfast + Vegetables. Don’t get me wrong, I love sweet breakfast foods (Maple syrup on pancakes! Maple syrup on scones! Maple syrup on oatmeal! Maple syrup on an empty plate!)…but I love them for dinner. In the mornings? I’ve been waking up to cravings for big piles of savory green things and backyard-farm-fresh eggs.
Hemp + Chickpea Flatbread. My new favorite flatbread! Earthy, crispy, and full of protein!
Hemp-pea Flatbread
- 2T hemp protein powder
- 1/4c chickpea flour
- 1/4c water
Combine that extensive ingredient list. Pour onto hot nonstick pan. Wait, flip, wait, eat. Particularly good with curries/Indian flavors!
Favorite food combos? What should I cook in my cast iron skillet next? It was a Christmas gift, and I can’t wait to put it to (good) use!

Strange eats indeed, but delicious nonetheless! Some of my favorite combos lately are peanut butter & brown rice (in stir fries), avocado & eggs, cheese & fruit preserves, applesauce & yogurt, and cottage cheese with blueberries & chocolate protein powder!
Have a fab weekend, Allie!
Oh my gosh, PB & rice would be amazing! And there’s nothing better than an omelet full of avocado! Okay, we are totally on the same weird-combo page, haha.
I didn’t know you were so creative in the kitchen! i need to start eating eggs for breakfast instead of frosted mini wheats.
Oh man, but frosted miniwheats are pretty darn amazing too…I’ll just probably wait and have them for dinner instead ;D
mm I am struggling in the grocery department lately so I need some new affordable ideas, these sound great
That flatbread comes out to being so cheap! (Okay, and vodka and candy canes are pretty darn affordable too, as long as you don’t get all fancy with high-end liquor ;D )
I agree with Alex ^ Also, I totally like breakfast for dinner and pizza for breakfast.
You had me hooked at vodka and peppermint sticks – love it!!
Mmm, it’s so good. I though about saving it for Vodka week (oh yes, you know I’m going to turn that mmaz into a week ;D ), but figured that, while I’ll down peppermint year-round, it might seem a little, you know, “out of season”
Haha – we need to have an AM hair contest. Seriously… it won’t stand up when I want it to, but first thing in the AM its at attention.
Happy SBG!!!
Argh, exactly–My hair has NO volume the rest of my life, but for the first hour of the day? It refuses to do anything else but fly up and out.
Interesting eats ^^ I really love the chickpea flatbread and hemp protein idea ^^ Great way to have to-go high protein quick meals
Haha! Your hair looks so funky in the mornings
Mine’s kind of boring tbh and doesn’t look that much different then before I go to sleep.
I always get a good giggle when I look in the mirror in the morning
And I looove flatbreads, such a quick and easy addition to any meal. Plus I’m a huge fan of dunking/dipping!
ooooooh the candy cane vodka sounds like it would be my most favorite thing ever…. I’m not even sure I should try it.. looks downright dangerous!
Haha, I use it mostly in hot cocoa, so I figure one pepperminty shot per big mug of cocoa is a cozy (and delicious) evening treat, but isn’t going to push me over the edge. But if I used it for something stronger like a peppermint martini? Yeah, things could get real fun, real fast
Mmmm, nothing beats good cornbread! Sorry about the lumpy version!
I like your hair first thing in the AM.. it totally defies gravity!
I just saw a recipe for candy cane vodka in a Rachael Ray magazine!!
Aw man, there goes Rachael Ray, stealing all the good ideas again
And no worries about the cornbread, it’s just an excuse to make MORE cornbread…and that’s never a bad thing.
Hahahaha I love that you included your hair in the strange but good post. Candy cane vodka? You are a genius.
I was (sleepily) cracking up as soon as I looked in the mirror. It had to be shared. I have no shame ;D And oh man, I’m pretty sure I am, ’cause that combo is amazing. Nothing like hot spiked pepperminty hot chocolate on a cold winter night!
Please share any tips you find on working with your cast iron pan!! I just got one, too, and am having a terrible time figuring out how to use it best. Every time I cook with it, I spend a good 20 minutes cleaning the dang thing–it’s a mess! I want to like, I really do, but man-oh-man . . . .
I definitely will! I want to do lots with mine–especially more (successful) cornbread, as I love skillet breads.
Chocolate + peppermint is a hot combo in our house this holiday season + alcohol… My hubby would be in heaven! We got an iron skillet as a wedding gift but I’ve yet to use it. I know it’s meant to be popped into the oven but I have this strange fear that it’s gonna catch on fire. I’ve been craving some good cornbread like crazy lately!
You should totally make him a spiked peppermint-hot-cocoa mug
GOOD stuff. I stuck mine in the oven for my cornbread fail–The fail was my fault for substituting, but I CAN report that no pans caught on fire!
Haha, well maybeee just maybeee I’ll give it a shot
Maybe it’s because we’ve been following each other for awhile now, but this doesn’t seem strange at all. You’ve desensitized me to weirdness [or I just like weird stuff, too].
What about candy cane vodka, plus hot cocoa…for breakfast? Yeah, I went there.
And now I want to go there too.
I had that flatbread pic on my phone and was all, “Well, guess I’ll have to save that for a later post”…until I realized that for, you know, the normal folk of the world, hemp in bread isn’t really that run-of-the-mill.
ive missed you! and you are adorable! now, this peppermint vodka.. genius!
Ah, missed you too! Had a great internet break over the holidays, but holy cow, catching back up is hard!
Spiked peppermint hot chocolate? Yum!
Love the candy cane concoction! And I’m jealous of your fresh eggs.
Your hemp + chickpea flat bread looks DEVINE! Need to make some this weekend for sure! Candy canes and vodka..talk about the NEW Absolut flavor that needs to HAPPEN! That sounds DELICIOUS! Have an amazing weekend
Too, too funny, Allie! Especially the hair photo…you ARE a brave girl!! Vodka and candy canes sounds wonderful! Wonder if I could use a candy cane Tootsie Pop?!? Have a great Sunday!
We used to put candy canes in vodka in college….and jolly ranchers too! haha I have been eating breakfast for dinner almost every night this passed week because I have been craving savory breakfasts too! Weird??!! And I am making that bread! It looks amazing!!! Hope you had a great weekend Allie!
Cast iron is the best! I cook everything in mine!
The flatbread looks awesome! And I see nothing wrong with vegetables for breakfast, although (cooked) veggies for lunch leave me ravenous afterwards!
You should cook everything in your cast iron skillet. You can also use it for weight lifting too. There’s not too many kitchen appliances you can say that about!! Great gift; I love mine. I got it at an antique store years ago so it’s well seasoned now.
Candy Cane + vodka = greatest idea EVER!! I bet it would be even more awesome with the alcohol infused whip cream on top =)
Oh man, so many batches of my cornbread have looked like that. You really need the fat if you want it spread evenly.
Also, that candy cane vodka looks insane! I love the idea of stirring it into hot cocoa.
That looks like the easiest version of ‘socca’ yet. Plus you add hemp protein, which, in my particular case, would make it GREEN. [Gotta love hemp powder.] I need to try that, along with this coconut-bread-in-the-microwave trend I have just started noticing…
