For those of you who read the title of this post and were expecting Astronaut Ice Cream (does that still exist?)…I apologize. Instead, you get things growing in the dirt.
Just a week ago my garden looked like a large brown rectangle, but my seeds have taken off!
Beets. I was worried about these suckers, but it turns out a few are going to grow after all. Soon(ish) I can make beet curry with homegrown beets!
Beans. Beets, beans, Battlestar Galactica.
Collard greens. Turns out I’m a Southern gal after all.
Corn, zukes, cukes, okra and turnips all look great as well. My interior housework/redecorating may have taken a backseat to outdoor gardening, but it will all be worth it when I get fresh homegrown goodies!
And the most important future food of all? Ethiopian tonight for an early Mother’s Day celebration. And by early Mother’s Day celebration I mean my dad wants to buy a motorcycle from the town next to me, so they are driving over this evening to check it out and to grab some exotic food while they’re at it–their small town is as ethnically diverse as one Chinese buffet, one Taco Bell and a Papa John’s. Fine dining.
Ooh ooh ooh I’m so excited for the wee little plants š It sounds like you have an abundance of delicious veggies coming!! š
Have fun celebrating your momma, Ethiopian night sounds fun!
Astronaut ice cream still does exist! I was at a sporting goods store the other day looking at camping stuff and YES… astronaut ice cream was available!!!! Haha. Anyways…
I’m so happy for your garden! I haven’t planted mine yet š” EEEEK! Have fun eating some delicious Ethiopian food with your momma!!
Good to know it’s still around! I don’t think I’ve seen it since grade school–love that it’s not camping food, haha.
Oh wow, your garden is growing amazingly well š
I used to get that ice cream every time I visited OMSI (our science museum). LOVED it.
and I love you for the Jim Dwight quote!!
so excited for your garden…
I remember it was brought to our classrooms from time to time when I was in grade school–I just haven’t seen it in years! I also haven’t been to a science museum in years (unfortunately), so that might have something to do with it.
Have a great time with Mom and Dad! Ethiopian, huh? I’ve never had that. Can’t wait to see all of the wonderful things you’ll grow in your garden! Have a great weekend, Allie!!
Look at you being all garden-like lol… yeah that made no sense. I can’t wait to see how much more they grow, it will be so fulfilling for you! Have such an awesome time!
It’s so exciting when your own veg start growing – even better when you can pick and eat them š
That picture of the water droplet on the leaf is beautiful. Hope you have/are having a great time with your mum and dad!
For the record, astronaut ice cream is nasty with a capital N! Have a great evening with the parents- I am yet to try Ethiopian food but from what Ive heard, it’s delicious!
I don’t remember being a huge fan of it, but I also haven’t even seen it, much less eaten it, since grade school! And OH, you really do need to try it! Such great flavor and spice!
Yay seedlings growing, that is always exciting! Yumm, are you going to have that Ethiopian sourdough again???!! I still haven’t forgotten about how amazing that looked š
Forget about looks–the stuff just TASTES amazing! But no, we ended up grabbing thai instead, since the fam was in a rush and we didn’t want to speed through an Ethiopian meal. Bummer, because I dream about sourdough bread scooping up piles of spicy lentils and veggies ;D
Ooh so exciting! I love that they’re already growing so well, it’s lovely to have your own produce to harvest and then eat š
Papa John’s is so culturally diverse that they have expanded to London. I ask myself “why?” every time I see one. We now have Dominos, Pizza Hut and PJ’s. The only difference is that they charge you for the garlic “butter” sauce. No way are you getting anything for free! š
I’m so so so so so so jealous of your collard greens. Make ’em reeeeal spicy and post some pics!
Also, I’d love to try astronaut ice cream. Or any astronaut food. It’s a life goal.
I don’t remember astronaut ice cream as being particularly good, I think it was mostly the novelty of it (maybe why I never see it around any more?). And Papa John’s charging for extra sauces infuriates me. I love dunking crust in gobs of marinara, but that just ends up being ridiculously expensive these days when it’s .50 or whatever per little tiny container.
And don’t doubt I’ll be spicing those greens up! My ridiculously spicy chili powder is ready…
Great look veggies!
Woo HOO!!! The seeds have sprouted beautifully. (I just planted kale and when the seedlings poked through the soil, I squealed with excitement – which made my husband laugh) Have a wonderful weekend.
you really inspire me to want to garden (better) i’ve kind of started…sort of… i think reading this may have given me an extra push! š
I hope so! I am absolutely in love with my garden–I can see it outside my kitchen window, which makes me smile even while I’m doing dishes. And if something makes doing dishes not so bad, you KNOW it’s worth the work š
Wow, your garden looks great!
I’ve never had Ethiopian food but my husband loves it. Your parents town must be pretty darn small. Don’t they at least have a good Mexican joint with real guacamole and black beans? Every city deserves that.
You should have your husband take you some time! It’s definitely an experience if nothing else–they don’t give you silverware! And nope–there is a non-taco-bell Mexican option, but everything there tastes like it came out of a can or a freezer, it’s not much better (if at all). They do a lot of their own cooking, to say the least ;D
You’ll have some yummy treats in no time!
