Yesterday’s WIAW was full of sauciness, and I got some saucy requests for recipes. Which I will cater to, because I love sauce. I’m a dipping/dunking fanatic. And while ketchup is the one true love of my life (and sriracha is my mistress), sometimes I decide it will be okay to switch up flavors/eat something that has nutritional value. So yesterday? I mentioned some new favorites: Curry “yogurt” sauce and nutritional yeast “I-refuse-to-compare-it-to-cheese” sauce. These are so simple and quick–all you need for a meal is veggies to dunk or grains to drown.
Curry “Yogurt” Sauce
Curry “Yogurt” Sauce
- 1t Curry powder
- 1/4 block Lite silken tofu
- 2t Lemon juice
Blend. Dunk. Enjoy. Yours will be smoother than mine, if you have a real blender. Add some chili powder, if you like things hot. Perfect for veggies, falafel, flatbread and more.
Seitan “sausage” plus cauliflower and dip.
Nutritional Yeast Sauce
Nutritional yeast is nutritional yeast. It is delicious, I love it, it is not cheese. Accept it for what it is. And accept that it still makes an amazing substitute for mac n’ cheese when stirred into quinoa.
Nutritional Yeast Sauce
- 1/4c Nutritional yeast
- 1/2-1t Onion powder
- 1t Balsamic vinegar
- 1/2c Almond milk
- 1/8t guar gum OR 2T flour
Whisk together (over heat if you are using flour, in any old bowl if using gum), wait for it to thicken, dump on food. Or dump food in.
What’s your favorite sauce?
I had a sriracha mayo at a burger joint in DC. So so so so good. I wonder if you could recreate this in a veganized way?
Yep – I make it all the time! 2 tablespoons of Earth Balance mayo (or Veganaise) + 1 teaspoon Sriracha + a dash each of garlic salt and chili powder. It’s awesome…especially with steamed broccoli or nori rolls to dunk into it!
Oooo, broccoli in sriracha mayo? This sounds brilliant and amazing. Vegenaise=on my shopping list now. Or I could probably make something similar with the same base as the curry above–silken tofu + lemon + sriracha
I will have to try the nutritional yeast! I have not had real cheese in so long I hope I can get my childlike emotions of eating Mac and cheese back again! Love and Shine Court Star
You have got to try it! It’s not an exact taste replica, but a bowl of quinoa smothered in this sauce definitely has the same “feel” to it as mac n’ cheese. Plus this is one serving, yet it comes to a lot of sauce–perfect.
I’ve only ever used nutritional yeast to make kale chips but oh man they were good. They were actually the red pepper version, I could eat the whole batch at once.
Ketchup is also my lover. I just got into Sriracha like 2 weeks ago and I’m a little obsessed haha! It’s good on eggs!
It’s good on everything! Like, seriously. I’d probably even put it on a dessert…Now I want to try that, just to see.
“It is delicious, I love it, it is not cheese. Accept it for what it is.”
YES.
When I was in Toronto, I ate this amazing cauliflower burrito in a creamy curry sauce. I’ve been inhaling curried yogurt sauce ever since. nom.
That burrito sounds worth a trip to Toronto just for that!
I need to start making more of my own sauces. I tend to buy stuff since I’m lazy. I bought nootch for the first time the other day and can’t wait to try it. I’m not vegan (or even vegetarian) but I thought it would be fun to try after reading about it on so many blogs!
It has such a unique flavor, I really like it! It’ll be interesting to hear your opinion of it, let me know what you think!
I should have known there was tofu involved. Brilliant. It needs to happen. NEEDS TO.
haha yeah nooch =/= cheese. Not at all. BUT…. I do love it for its Vitamin B content. And I have to admit I do actually love the flavor!
Exactly! I love the flavor and it’s great protein too, 1/4c ends up being 12g! So I’ll keep eating it and enjoying it, but fully acknowledging that it is nothing like cheese…
The curry “yogurt” sauce looks so yum! I love making a sauce out of watered down yogurt (the real deal ha), cumin & garlic powder…it tastes SO good over sauteed cabbage!
Ohh, this totally could have used garlic powder! What doesn’t garlic make even better??
Yay! A vegan yogurt sauce!
sriraaaachaaaa!! I’m not really supposed to eat too much spicy food because of my stomach, but lately since I haven’t been eating as much bread and stuff, I’m not having too much trouble with anything including spices! I think that’s the right correlation? 😀 And this looks pretty good! I’ve never thought of using tofu with curry for a sauce. There’s this REALLY tasty recipe from Mayumi, the author of a macrobiotic diet book and it’s on this blog! I tried it a long time ago and it was amaaaaazing in my opinion. http://balancejoyanddelicias.wordpress.com/2010/10/21/two-articles-two-recipes/
Ohh, so glad cutting the bread is helping–because a life with no spicy would be doable, just not as, well, spicy ;D And tofu tartar sauce?? That has to happen. Soon.
I am so excited to make the nooch sauce! I want to douse my cauliflower rice in it.
Ohhh, it would be so good over cauliflower! Can’t wait to hear what you think of it 🙂
I’m a sauce fanatic too, I just love dipping my food what can I say 😛 I love the look of your curry sauce, I make a really similar sauce with actual yogurt but using tofu instead is such a good idea!
I am definitely planning on making that nooch sauce! I have some in my pantry but haven’t done anything with it yet… now I shall!
Let me know what you think!
Your 2 recipes look tasty! A while ago, I made a nutritionel sauce with brwon rice & veggies. I am sure that you will love it. here is the tasty link: http://sophiesfoodiefiles.wordpress.com/2012/05/09/vegan-baked-brown-rice-broccoli-in-a-cheesy-sauce-yeah/
